In November 1992, a group of Residents from the Parish of Alfeizerão, promoted a solidarity movement with the purpose of refounding the Misericórdia de Alfeizerão and thus restoring to the population, an entity capable of creating conditions to respond to the challenges of the present time, no longer to solve the needs of a distant past, but rather to provide help to an increasingly aging population and in need of proximity support, which their relatives, many of whom live far from their homeland, and in distant places, are not could provide.
The Misericórdia de Alfeizerão was officially established on November 23, 1995, the 21 articles of the Commitment of Santa Misericórdia de Alfeizerão bring together all the rules, rights and duties of indispensable knowledge for its functioning and had their final wording approved at the General Assembly of November 9, 2014
The Misericórdia de Alfeizerão, to respond socially to the needs of the elderly population of the 26 villages that are part of the Parish of Alfeizerão, one of the largest in the Municipality in geographic area and in resident people, with around 5,000 inhabitants, about 25% of which, aged over 65, many of them living alone and in isolated places, started with the Home Support area in 1999, followed by the Day Care Center in 2004, Residential Home, Social Canteens, Food Bank, Ambulance Service, Health Care and Physical Rehabilitation in 2013.
In 2014 the Social Emergency Reception Center was created and in 2015 the Reception for Refugees was created, within the scope of the European Relocation Financing Programme. In the same year, the Social Office, Social Tourism, Social Store and Social Workshop were created.
In 2016, the Universidade Sénior da Misericórdia de Alfeizerão was founded, aimed at users aged over 50 and with a higher degree of mobility, who, after joining RUTS, started their activity in the academic year 2016/2017.
Misericórdia de Alfeizerão employs more than 50 workers, which makes this institution one of the largest employers in the parish.
The Institution has been operating since 2013, in its own premises built especially to serve as Social and Operational Headquarters.
The installed capacity makes it possible to serve 30 users at the Day Centre, 60 users at Home Support, 40 users at the Residential Home, 20 users at the Social Emergency Reception and Reception Center for 15 Refugees within the scope of the Program Funded by the European Union for the Relocation of Foreigners, coming from areas of armed conflict.
